Van Gogh’s Chair

This model represents the painting ‘Van Gogh’s Chair’ painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888. The original hangs in the National Gallery in London.

To suggest the odd perspective of the painting (the floor appears to slope down towards the viewer and the chair rails go at the wrong angle) the Meccano chair is not symmetrical, but bent out of line so that the seat is not a square, but instead it is a trapezium with the two left corners being right angles. Additionally, the seat is bent back so that when it sits on the sloping floor it stands upright.

The floor is composed of various red plates overlapped to give the effect of the tiled floor.
