Racing Car

This model was copied from a photograph that accompanied an article in a magazine called Vintage Spirit. It was one of a series on lesser-known engineers entitled “Frank Hornby the Meccano Man”.

The caption accompanying the picture was “Model speed record car made of Meccano parts c. 1950 on show at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu”. Although no specific car was named, the shape and lines would suggest that the model represents one of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird series.

Sir Malcolm Campbell (1885–1948) was almost unique in his day as he died from natural causes, unlike many of his counterparts who were killed attempting speed records.
