Rope Climber
Built by Ralph Laughton in September 2010 for the String Secretary’s Challenge
Based on the ‘magic box’ design of the 1930s, Konkoly built a model called ‘The Canadian Sheriff’. My model is based on the Konkoly model mechanism but I have removed the ‘Canadian’ features from the man in favour of a more nondescript figure. If anything, his hat gives him more of an oriental look!
This model is intended to be operated in the hand, the frame is purely a display stand to show the model in its intended pose.
The man is at the bottom of the rope; by holding the rope in one hand a pulling the weight with the other, he will climb the rope. He will descend by allowing the rope to go slack.
