The Angel of the North
Built by Brian Leach in January 2011 for the Famous Works of Art Secretary’s Challenge
The Angel of the North is a monument outside Gateshead. I decided to do this for the ‘Famous Work of Art’ Secretary’s Challenge because the only other things I could think of were either a Mondrian painting or an Andy Warhol soup tin!
The proper Angel of the North in the body section has sixteen-fold symmetry. The best I could achieve at the scale decided on was eight-fold and it is not complete at the back. This is partly due to lack of parts, but also due to getting everything to join at the top.
There are three vertical rods from the base for strength. The ribbing on the wings is horizontal strips and vertical rods. I did try vertical strips but it ended up looking overly busy.
