The Monument
Built by David Smithers in June 2005 for the Landmarks Secretary’s Challenge
As David himself says, he was rising to the Challenge, and built a model of “The Monument”.
The main part of the column is built up using four 2½” cylinders. They are joined without nuts and bolts by using three scruffy 2½” x 2½” plates bent into a large diameter and inserted halfway across each join. Friction keeps them nicely in place. The column itself is kept in place by an 11” rod extended by a 1” screwed rod fitted into a threaded coupling. This passes up inside, being secured at the base by a collar and at the top by a nut tightened up sufficiently to hold everything in place.
