Tornborg Tower Crane
Built by Brian Elvidge in April 2002
A freestanding tower crane of Swedish design and manufacture mounted on a static base. There is also a mobile version of this machine.
The model shown is approx 1:14 scale, powered by a faulhaber/Mike Dennis motor to a forward/reverse gearbox ,then to three motions, slewing, jib luffing, and hoisting. The jib is noteworthy in that it is in two sections, and jack-knifes as it is luffed in and out, achieving approx. 70% level luffing of the load.
The orginal idea came from Ian Allan’s book on cranes, and help from the manufacturers in Sweden is acknowledged.
A newer version of this model has since been constructed.
