Travelling Gantry Crane
Built by David Smithers in January 2010
The old instruction manuals contain a number of basically very good models. The limited number of parts in a given outfit (especially of nuts and bolts) means that the models are often a bti “skimpy” or “wobbly”. Using extra parts, they can form the basis of some very pleasing models, as I hope you will agree from my efforts with this model.
Main Modifications
- Tower 2” taller and fitted with suitable bracing.
- Span the same, but 1” wider and formed from 29½” angle girders.
- Single travel wheels replaced by two-wheel compensated bogies.
- Each movement motorised for convenience of operation.
