Grasshopper Beam Engine

In this simple Grasshopper beam engine design the beam is pivoted at the end, and the attachment for the connecting rod is part way along the beam. For those interested, this is a lever of the second order, whereas the conventional type is of the first order.

The flywheel uses a 6” pulley not often seen on models. The model runs well powered by a motor and gearbox via a simple belt drive.

What a smart idea — and with so few parts too!
