Traveling Gantry Crane
Built by Brian Elvidge in May 2021
A Meccano classic from the 1911 manuals rebuilt in 1970s colours, and slightly modified too.
It reproduces three motions:
- Travel of the bridge by turning the lowest handle, via a worm and pinion drive.
- Crab traversing either way by turning the upper-left handle, via a continuous cord drive.
- Hoist lifting and lowering the load by turning the upper-right handle.
In all it is a very intersting model to build and it works very well.
The modifications include extra girders where the bridge girders end each end, the flanged plate and plates on the long end portion.
