Planing Machine

This planing machine is model № 17 from the Meccano Super Models manual. In the manual it is not powered — my rebuild is powered by an electric motor of the pile type.

The model uses an interesting quick-return mechanism, consisting of a pivoted strip and a rotating bush wheel bearing a slide piece. This drives the table flanged plate backwards and forwards in one of the stokes quickly. The tool holder can be traversed across the machine and the height adjusted using hand wheels to the side. An additional spring was added in the height adjustment as the carriage tended to drop readily.

The machine works well, and is relatively easy to construct, with a few tricky parts such as the sliding carriage.
