Double Fairlie Locomotive

Dozens of railways around the world have used Robert Francis Fairlie’s patented design. The design was also championed by the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales, today a heritage line where double Fairlie locomotives are still in operation.

The starting point for the model was to use hub disks as the wheels. So the scale is 1:6 and the model is over 5’ long.

The model does not have a track. Instead, the model is on a stand and the wheels are a quarter inch off the ground. A single Meccano motor powers all eight wheels. The motion of the wheels, pistons and connecting rods can be seen.
