Compact Horizontal Steam Engine
Built by Brian Elvidge in June 2013
One of Andreas Konkoly’s ingenious models. Rebuilt from pictures of Nick Rodgers’ rebuild at Holy Trinity Meccano Club in April 2013. It measures 12½” x 3½” extending to 5½” at the flywheel end. Built from blue and yellow parts, it is driven by a can type motor through a reduction chain.
The cylinder is reversed, i.e. facing the wrong way, with the motion of the piston being transferred by rods to the other end, where the crankshaft and flywheel are mounted. To make this model satisfactory, a number of modifications were necessary, some major, some trivial, to the base construction, crankshaft and its bearings, and cylinder areas.
