Floating Crane
Built by Adrian Ashford in September 2017
This is a ‘scaled down’ version of the Floating Crane featured in the November 1956 issue of Meccano Magazine. It is approximately 25% smaller than the original — so that it will fit in a suitcase for transport!
The screw luffing and hoisting are hand-operated, but the slewing is powered by a 6V motor in the pontoon, through a double-reduction worm drive, controlled by a reversing switch built up from Elektrikit parts operated by a deck fitting. A sliding counter-weight for the jib was added on the basis of a picture of a crane of this type on the cover of the May 1940 issue of Meccano Magazine.
