Hang on A Minute Lads, I’ve Got A Great Idea…

Following his Bizarre Building in Liverpool, Richard Wilson has perched a replica of Charlie Croker’s coach on the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill.

As you may remember, as the end of the film The Italian Job, Charlie Croker’s coach, with the gold at back, ended up delicately poised over the edge of a cliff, just about to fall off. Richard Wilson reproduced it as an art-work for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

This is a Meccano version. The coach is based on one in the July 1979 issue of Meccano Magazine, intended to be made with the then current dark blue and yellow № 5 set. It has been modified to look more like the one in the film. The other photographs in the magazine and the sparse instructions made this model much more difficult to build than one might expect.

The original replica is worked hydraulically, but this one is powered by two electric motors working at different speeds.
