House and Car
Built by Peter Clay in June 2011 for the Other Systems Secretary’s Challenge
I had a № 2 Cliki set and the challenge was an opportunity to build something with it.
I tried the house (the only model on the leaflet) and finished it second attempt. The system is similar to the Lego and Betta-Bilda systems of the time (1960s) but smaller and more fiddly, also not as secure. The model has no rigidity till the roof is fitted and even then the chimney pot and aerial rest on held by gravity! Also the bricks have some moulding flash so they do not bed down properly and any gaps affect the layers above. There are opening doors and a bay window with a rather twee little pot plant in it. Twee rather sums the whole thing up, although it is a rather attractive model.
The “car” had tiny plastic wheels which press on to an axle rod the diameter of a needle with journals in a brick. The leaflet shows a boy of about four. I wonder how a four year old today would cope? There were also four Cliki plus sets that could make bridges, cranes etc. on the same plug together basis. If anybody knows of any available Cliki please let me know — it is an entertaining diversion from normal modelling though another Meccano product that fell by the wayside.
