Olympic Swimming Pool
Built by Tim Surtell in June 2012 for the Olympic Games Secretary’s Challenge
After building an experimental swimmer for another model, I realised he would be ideal for the Olympic Games Secretary’s Challenge, so I built a swimming pool around him.
The ‘water’ is made from florists’ Water Beads purchased from eBay.
Turning the handle makes the swimmer’s arms rotate so it looks like he is doing backstroke. The first version included a belt drive from the handle and proved unsatisfactory due to slippage. Now the drive is direct and the pool is raised by 1½” to achieve this change.
