Samuel Pepys’ Cheese and Wine
Built by Richard Marsden in September 2016 for the Great Fire of London Secretary’s Challenge
One of the best eye-witness reports of the Great Fire was written by Samuel Pepys in his diary. He became extremely concerned for the safety of his own house, and had some of his belongings moved away. At one point he and his neighbour dug pits in his garden where they buried their wine, some of Pepys’ important documents, and his parmesan cheese.
Fortunately the fire was stopped before it reached him, and he later reported that all the buried items were safely retrieved. However, these have long since been lost, and only Meccano replicas survive.
