Model of a 1910 back gear lathe. This lathe, originally driven by overhead line shafting, is now fitted with its own electric motor and is inspired by a photo of an old Herbert lathe.

Hi Les. Just saw your fine model of a lathe with working tool support feed by the threaded spindle. I noticed that you also feature a rack and pinon mechanism to quickly change the support position. Doing so I assume there must be a way to decouple the driving threaded shaft from the support. In a full scale lathe this is accomplished by split nut (correct eng. term? ) Looking forward to your reply. Cheers, Thomas.
