Half-Track

“Never act with animals or children.”

“Or,” I could add, “with classic military vehicles.” I can’t watch Richard Burton in Raid on Rommel, going round in circles feigning near-death from exhaustion, without taking more notice of what he’s riding in. It’s a half-track, an intriguing vehicle. There are large front wheels to clear obstacles and provide the steering, then caterpillar tracks to spread the tractive effort over as much area as possible, to avoid loosening soft surfaces such as the sand Burton is driving over. You do see Meccano models of the half-track from time-to-time. My wife bought me an Army set off eBay for Christmas, to add to what I already had, so it was time to build my own.
