American Railway Carriage
Built by Richard Marsden in September 2023 for the Railway Anniversary Models Secretary’s Challenge
I built this model a little while ago, to go with my 4–8–4 American locomotive. It is based on a late 19th/early 20th century American railroad car. Its relevance to the Anniversary Challenge is that the London Underground railways were developed for a while with American finance and management; the name Charles Tyson Yerkes comes to mind. This influence extended to the design of the rolling stock and the terminology; carriages on the Underground are referred to as ‘cars’ to this day. So any resemblance of this model to those early Metropolitan Railway trains is not a coincidence.
It was a relatively straightforward model to design and build — just a lot of parts to assemble. I’d never brought it to a meeting before, so this was a good excuse!
