Village Church

“Stands the church clock at ten to three

And is there honey still for tea?”

The clock in question – Grantchester — actually stopped at half past three. Even though that scans and rhymes just as well (although I never felt the first line scanned properly anyway, with the two adjacent words “church” and “clock” both stressed), Rupert Brooke clearly thought his choice of words had a better poetic flavour. Or perhaps he couldn’t wait the extra forty minutes for dessert. I don’t know; I know next to nothing about poets or poetry.

In the interests of fitting the model on top of Part 52, I’ve heavily simplified the shape of the church, just a tower and a nave, and no little spire in the middle of the tower. If poets can have their poetic licence, why not us?
