The Squares Secretary’s Challenge

This Challenge came from Richard Marsden. 2025 is a ‘square’ year — 2025 equals 45 squared. The last time this happened was 1936; the next time will be 2116. So most people will only ever experience one such year.

He, therefore, set a Challenge on the theme of ‘squares’. This could have been a model with a square footprint, a steam engine with a cylinder bore equal to its stroke, a mechanism with the main parts in a square (like a bevel-geared differential, for example), a square-rigged sailing ship… He was sure other members could come up with other ideas; some could be quite way-out!
